Gifted singer, bassist should be one of the highlights on San Diego Symphony Summer Pops series

It’s hard to pin down the precise meaning of jazz, but Wayne Shorter’s definition works for Esperanza Spalding.
“He defines the word as ‘I dare you,’ ” Spalding said. “I think that’s a cool definition.”
Spalding — whose appearance at Embarcadero Marina Park South on Aug. 20 should be one of the highlights of the San Diego Symphony’s 2015 Summer Pops series — also confounds a simple explanation.
You could call her a bassist, you might even call her a jazz bassist. But she’s also a supremely gifted singer, songwriter, poet and artist.
She’ll be putting that all together in her “EMILY’S D+EVOLUTION” show, which she’s been touring since April and has already recorded, with a release planned for later in the year.
