Eight High School Bands To Perform Onstage
ADMISSION IS FREE: Public Invited to Attend (General Seating)

For the first time ever, the San Diego Symphony High School Band Festival will take place at the Jacobs Music Center. Eight high school bands from San Diego Unified School District will perform onstage. They include: Mira Mesa High School, Morse High School, Patrick Henry High School, Point Loma High School, San Diego High School, Scripps Ranch High School, Serra Mesa High School and University City High School. This high school band festival highlights the music education taking place in San Diego high schools.

Each band will perform two or three brief selections (lasting a total of about 35-40 minutes), and will be evaluated and critiqued by guest clinician Frank Ticheli. (Each band is performing one Ticheli work on their program.) Ticheli teaches music composition at the University Southern California. He is well known for his band compositions, many of which have become standards in the high school band repertoire. In addition to composing, Ticheli has appeared as guest conductor of his music at Carnegie Hall, at many American universities and music festivals, and in cities throughout the world including Beijing, Shanghai, London, Manchester, Singapore, Rome, Sydney, Schladming, Austria and numerous cities throughout Japan.

The festival is a collaboration between the San Diego Unified School District Visual and Performing Arts Department and the San Diego Symphony. The goal is to create an opportunity for students to perform onstage at Copley Symphony Hall, to perform a work by a living composer (Frank Ticheli) and receive insight into the music by the composer himself. The festival will also give the teachers an opportunity to receive feedback from one of the premier music educators in the country.
