Musician Spotlight: San Diego Symphony Violinist Zou Yu and the Art of Teaching Music

"Teaching is important to me because it allows me to share the joy and beauty of music with the next generation. Music has had a profound impact on my life, and through teaching, I can pass on that experience to others."

A native of Shanghai, China, Zou Yu completed her musical education at Oberlin College and at the Yale School of Music. In 2016 she joined the San Diego Symphony as Assistant Principal Second Violin. "I have many cherished memories from my time as a student. As a Chinese student coming to the United States to study music, everything was exciting from the very beginning. I remember traveling to different countries and cities each year for performances and competitions, which was an incredible experience. I had the opportunity to meet people of all ages and cultural backgrounds, and these interactions truly opened my mind. They inspired me to explore more art and music, deepening my passion. I have always loved connecting with people through the universal language of music. "

Zou eventually developed and honed her passion for connection by deciding to become a teacher herself.

"It’s not just about imparting technical skills, it’s about inspiring students to find their own voice and to appreciate the transformative power of music. Teaching also keeps me constantly learning and growing, as every student brings a new perspective and challenge. My teaching style focuses not only on imparting solid technical skills but also on providing my students with a well-rounded musical experience. I actively seek out opportunities for them to perform and participate in competitions, as I believe these experiences are essential for growth and confidence. Additionally, I encourage my students to attend concerts, explore different forms of arts, and travel to discover the beauty in life. These experiences inspire their creativity and deepen their understanding of music beyond the classroom."

The San Diego Symphony had the opportunity to speak with one of Zou's students about her musical journey and path to finding Zou.

"Hi, my name is Lina. I am 10 years old and I am excited to start the 5th grade this year. When I was around 5 years old, my school ran a talent show. I watched, amazed, and went home to tell my mom: 'Mom, I want to perform at the talent show next year.' My mom said okay, but we needed to find a “talent” for me to perform. A few months later, my mom found Ms. Zou Yu. My dad rented me a violin, and I started my musical journey at 6 years old. Shortly after I started my first class, the COVID pandemic happened. Classes continued through it all. Maybe it was because there was nothing else to do, but I practiced violin regularly. About a year later, Ms. Zou invited me to play with her at one of the San Diego Symphony’s Learning and Community Engagement Programs. I had the best time!"

Over the course of the next few years, Lina would continue her music lessons with Zou and has had the opportunity to grow in talent and character, performing for numerous other musical organizations and audiences. Moreover, she has aspirations to play her music around the world and to teach others and share her appreciation for music as well! A particular milestone achievement, Lina won first prize in her category at the 2023 Irvine International Music Competition and performed at Carnegie Hall as part of the winner's recital.  This performance paved the way and opened the opportunity to secure an invitation which allowed her to attended the Vienna Young Talents Masterclass last June. As part of the Masterclass' culminating activity, Lina performed at Golden Hall at Musikverein in Vienna, Austria.

"I also want to travel to less fortunate places like the Philippines and perform for kids there. I want to inspire them and show them that they too can play and enjoy music. Music should not be only for the privileged. It should be for everyone because, for me, music is my safe space. When I’m feeling overwhelmed and having an anxious episode, music saves me. Sometimes I don’t even have to hear music. I just close my eyes and picture myself in an empty room with my violin and my favorite piece. I imagine myself playing, and all my anxiety melts away."

Zou reflects on her experience teaching Lina and others and the impact she feels herself as a musician with the San Diego Symphony.

"My role in the San Diego Symphony deeply influences my teaching.Performing with such a talented group of musicians constantly challenges me to improve my own skills, which in turn helps me become a better teacher. I bring the same level of discipline, attention to detail, and passion for music that I experience in the symphony to my teaching. Being an active performer allows me to provide real-world insights to my students about what it takes to succeed as a professional musician. It also keeps me connected to the broader musical community, which I can draw upon to enrich my students’ learning experience."

Lina definitely feels such an appreciation for Zou's mentorship to help her hone her skills and talent. However, despite all the musical learning she has experienced with Zou, she really admires Zou for the person she is and the passion for music they can share together.

"Ms. Zou Yu is the best violinist that I know personally in my whole life. As my teacher, she always knows what’s best for me. She knows what I need to do, step-by-step, to achieve my goals and more. Ms. Zou Yu is my true musical idol. She is someone I aspire to become. Maybe if I work hard enough, I can be just like her and sound phenomenal."
