Chinese New Year Celebration w/ Shanghai Chinese Orchestra

Shanghai Chinese Orchestra
Zhejiang Shaoju Opera Theatre
Yao Shenshen, conductor

Join us for a celebration of the Lunar New Year and experience the beauty of Chinese music being played on traditional instruments. With the sounds of bowed and plucked strings, winds and percussion, the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra evokes vivid imagery of China’s splendor in a vibrant performance of traditional folksongs and newly orchestrated works.

A fascinating musical evening in which East meets West, the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra reprises its celebrated New Oriental Music Scene program, which opened the 18th Shanghai International Arts Festival and toured throughout Europe to critical acclaim. Hear famous works such as “Dancing Birds" (adapted from A Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix), “The Silk Road” and “Farewell to My Concubine,” along with riveting performances of contemporary pieces such as “Flying Birds,” adapted from Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee.”

WANG YUNFEI: Jiang Nan (South of Yangtze)
LUO XIAOCI: Spirit of Chinese Calligraphy
Farewell to My Concubine (adapted by Han Wenhe)
