About

With one of the most distinctive voices in jazz and popular music history, Billie Holiday remains beloved around the world decades after the end of her too-short life. “Lady Day” set the standard for jazz singing with her unique phrasing and warm vocal qualities, eloquently bending tempo and pitch. Gilbert Castellanos assembles an outstanding lineup of musicians and a very special guest vocalist to pay tribute to this elegant, essential artist.

Come early for a pre-concert performance presented onstage at 7pm by students from the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory.

*The San Diego Symphony Orchestra does not appear in this concert.

Note from the Series Curator

"Billie Holiday did not have a huge range, but she had a very unique timbre to her voice that is unmatched, and one of the most recognized voices of all time. She set the standard for every jazz singer with laid-back, creative phrasing that was always “in the pocket.” Holiday mimicked horn players such as Lester Young and Harry “Sweets” Edison, throwing in a colorful dissonant note into the melody once in a while. This is a show that I highly recommend and has been on my bucket list for years now. Thank you for your support, and see you at the concert!"  - Gilbert Castellanos, Jazz @ The Jacobs Series Artistic Curator
