ViolaRachel Halvorson

Rachel Halvorson is currently an acting section violist of the San Diego Symphony. She previously played 4 seasons as principal viola with the Sarasota Orchestra, as well as the Sarasota String Quartet. During the summer season, Ms. Halvorson is principal viola at Music in the Mountains (Durango, CO), as well as a section violist with Grand Teton Music Festival and Britt Festival Orchestra in 2022. Ms. Halvorson has performed with orchestras such as the Cincinnati, Houston, San Antonio, Jacksonville, Florida Orchestra and Boston Symphony in an opportunity through Tanglewood. She has joined festivals including Tanglewood, Spoleto Festival, National Repertory Orchestra and Credo Festival on summer fellowships. In 2018 she took first prize at the American Viola Society’s Excerpt Competition and Collegiate Solo Competitions. As a chamber musician, Ms. Halvorson has coached with the Juilliard, Ebene, Dover, Cavani, Calder and Jupiter Quartets.

Rachel Halvorson holds her Bachelors of Music from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, studying with Peter Slowik, and her Masters of Music from Rice University, where she acted as Teaching Assistant to Ivo Jan van Der Werff and coached chamber music for the Preparatory Program. Ms. Halvorson enjoys running, trying new coffees and exploring nature trails with her aussie-doodle puppies, Apollo and Athena.
