ASHFORD UNIVERSITY SUMMER POPS 2014!

The Ashford University SUMMER POPS is San Diego Symphony's annual outdoor summer concert series. The concerts are performed on a stage we construct each year at Embarcadero Marina Park South, on San Diego Bay right behind the San Diego Convention Center. Seating options include cabaret tables, grandstand seating (fold-down chairs) and general admission lawn seating. As this is an outdoor venue by the Bay, warm and layered clothing is recommended. CLICK BELOW TO SUBSCRIBE ONLINE TODAY!

SUMMER POPS is 10 weeks of concerts from just before 4th of July through Labor Day, all featuring the San Diego Symphony and some of today's hottest pop acts. This year's Summer Pops performers include Boz Scaggs, Nathan Pacheco, Ozomatli, Burt Bacharach and more!. We'll also have some very hot tributes to Elvis, The Beatles, ABBA and Ray Charles, as well as a new concert/screening of Disney's classic Fantasia. Our Principal Summer Pops conductor is Matthew Garbutt.

Ashford University SUMMER POPS concerts begin, unless otherwise noted, at 7:30pm, with gates opening at 6pm. Subscription concerts are on Friday and Saturday nights, with some occasional Sunday nights, and Special concerts are on Thursdays and Sundays.

RAY CHARLES, MOTOWN AND BEYOND
presented by ELLIS HALL

Friday and Saturday, August 1 & 2
Ray Charles was truly one of the legendary voices in American music. Ellis Hall, a former protégé of Ray Charles, pays a Summer Pops tribute to the master with hits such as "I Can’t Stop Loving You," "This Little Girl of Mine," "Hit the Road Jack" and perhaps his most popular, "Georgia on My Mind."

NATHAN PACHECO
Sunday, August 3
An audience favorite at last year’s Summer Pops, Nathan Pacheco returns! First discovered by Yanni and straddling two divergent worlds of pop and opera, this rising star with a golden voice and two PBS specials will warm up a cool evening, performing everything from Puccini to "Time to Say Goodbye." With special guests Eric Rigler and Leo Z.

BROADWAY TONIGHT! featuring the musical CHICAGO
Friday and Saturday, August 8 & 9
“Come on babe why don’t we paint the town—mmm, mmm—and all that jazz.”  That’s right, it’s Bob Fosse’s smash Broadway musical—Chicago! Tony Award-winner Debbie Gravitte returns to grace our stage. The Phantom himself, Doug LaBrecque, dons the mask and Passion’s Melissa Errico completes this award-winning cast from the Great White Way. Be there when the curtain rises for Wicked, Hairspray and those killer dames from the Windy City—Roxy Hart and Velma Kelly.

Special Guests: SACRA/PROFANA, chorus

DISNEY'S FANTASIA
Sunday, August 10, special start time of 8pm
Disney shares one of its crown jewels of feature animation at Summer Pops with a live orchestra concert accompanying scenes from Walt Disney's original Fantasia (1940) and Disney Fantasia 2000 in high definition on the big screen. Highlights include Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite and Mickey Mouse in Dukas' The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Randall Craig Fleischer conducts.

CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE
Friday and Saturday, August 15 & 16
High-flying family fun comes to Summer Pops with the return of Cirque de la Symphony. Aerialists, strongmen and acrobats perform their breathtaking acts accompanied by classical music hits performed by the San Diego Symphony. Bring the whole family for this colorful and thrilling evening by the Bay!

BURT BACHARACH
Sunday, August 17
With more than 73 Top 40 hits in the US and 52 Top 40 hits in the UK, Burt’s music transcends time. Surrounded by his lush orchestrations, Burt and his trio of singers will perform his string of hits including "I Say a Little Prayer," "The Look of Love," "Walk on By" and "Always Something There to Remind Me." It’s the soundtrack of your life.

CASH'D OUT - A TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY CASH
Thursday, August 21
He began his concerts with “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” A country icon, his songs and sounds spanned rock ‘n roll, rockabilly, blues, folk and gospel.  In this tribute to “The Man In Black,” Cash’d Out captures his heart and soul and his distinctive bass-baritone voice with "I Walk The Line," "Ring of Fire," "A Boy Named Sue" and "Folsom Prison Blues"—just to name a few.

VANESSA WILLIAMS
Friday and Saturday, August 22 & 23
Stage and screen superstar Vanessa Williams will dazzle in one of the most sophisticated nights of the summer. Known for her woman-in-charge roles in TV’s Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives, this multi-talented performer is a veteran Broadway actress starring in the Tony Award-winning and landmark shows of a generation:  Kiss of the Spider Woman and Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods.

OZOMATLI
Sunday, August 24
After last year’s Summer Pops concert, where the whole audience was literally dancing in the seats, we had to bring back Latin band sensation Ozomatli to raise the temperature on the Bay once more! Their music is an urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of merengue and cumbia, hip hop and salsa, samba and jazz. Get ready to shake it!
