THE JOAN AND IRWIN JACOBS MUSIC CENTER
The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Music Center is the home of the San Diego Symphony. It is a multi-functional facility that can host concerts, comedy shows, corporate & civic events, film screenings and more inside its performance chamber, known as Copley Symphony Hall. It is equipped with state-of-the-art digital sound and lighting technology, and normally seats up to 2231, with possible front row expansions accommodating 39 more. Embedded inside the performance chamber is a full-sized Robert Morton pneumatic pipe organ and two carbon-arc film projectors.
The Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall began life as The Fox Theatre movie palace in 1929, part of the nationwide Fox theaters chain. It became the property of the San Diego Symphony in 1984 and was extensively renovated at that time. Significant upgrades to the stage and backstage facilities have occurred since then, including the recent completion of Grosvenor Family Musician Center. Great care has been taken to preserve much of the original look of the lobbies and performance chamber, however.
The Jacobs Music Center can also host events in three smaller spaces: the lower lobby, the Grand Tier lobby and the Revelle Room, each fully capable of electronic setups. In addition, The Center possesses a small catering facility.
