Cellist Andrew Hayhurst joined the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in 2015. He holds bachelor’s degrees in Cello Performance and Performing Arts Technology from the University of Michigan, where he graduated with highest honors, and earned his Master of Music from the Yale School of Music.
Mr. Hayhurst has performed regularly with the Los Angeles Opera and Los Angeles Philharmonic, including on their 2015 Asia tour. He has recorded in many of Hollywood’s major studios and previously served as Associate Principal Cellist of the San Bernardino Symphony. His performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio and Los Angeles’s KMozart.
As a chamber musician, Mr. Hayhurst has collaborated with members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. While at the University of Michigan, he formed a piano trio that won both the Midwest and Michigan MTNA Chamber Music Competitions. Since moving to San Diego, Mr. Hayhurst has been presented by Art of Elan, the ECHO Chamber Music Series, San Diego’s Central Library Concert Series, and he has performed as soloist with the California Chamber Orchestra.
His festival appearances include the Kneisel Hall Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Geneva Music Festival and Festival Mozaic. He has received awards from the University of Michigan, Yale School of Music, Colburn School of Performing Arts and the Santa Barbara Fé Bland Foundation. His primary teachers have been Richard Aaron, Robert deMaine, Aldo Parisot and Richard Naill.
Outside of music, Mr. Hayhurst enjoys tennis, chess, computer programming and reading. He has been involved with San Diego Refugee Tutoring in City Heights since 2018.
