Nick Grant was the Concertmaster of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in 2002 when the SDSO received the single largest donation in the history of American Symphony Orchestras from Joan and Irwin Jacobs, $120 million for which the entire SDSO organization is eternally grateful. Nick Grant is principal associate concertmaster emeritus of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, having served as principal second violin and associate concertmaster, as well as Concertmaster for six years. He is also the longest serving principal player in the history of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra at 46 years, having won his first audition with the orchestra at the age of 17.
Mr. Grant was principal second violin for nine years, associate concertmaster for ten years and served six years as Concertmaster. He is also the longest serving principal player in the 115-year history of the SDSO at 46 years and has won an unprecedented five nationally advertised auditions for different positions in the SDSO, having won his first audition at age 17. He is also the winner of the first concertmaster audition in the history of the SDSO, as it was previously a political appointment without open competition. The San Diego Symphony has recently named him as principal associate concertmaster emeritus and is the first musician in the 115-year history of the SDSO to hold an honorary title.
