TAO– TAIKO DRUMMERS OF JAPAN: THE ART OF THE DRUM*
A Winter Special Concert
Friday, February 17, 2012, 8pm

Back by popular demand, the awesome power and spectacle of an ancient Japanese drumming tradition returns to Copley Symphony Hall!

"Powerful, dynamic and unique" — Time Out

"Extraordinarily talented...incomparable muscular zeal" — Chicago Tribune

"Undoubtedly one of the finest shows on offer" — Edinburgh Evening News

*San Diego Symphony does not perform.

Artists,

TAO was formed in Aichi, Japan, in 1993. They moved their base to Aso-Kuju National Park in Oita in 1995, seeking a better environment for new creations. TAO's home base "Grandioso" was established on 40,000 square meters of land surrounded by beautiful nature. TAO created the perfect environment for musical creativity with three different rehearsal halls at Grandioso.

TAO decided to first concentrate on their roots in the southern Kyushu region and focus on performances in Kyushu only; this was to be the strategy until they achieved one million ticket sales. TAO felt they had to first establish their core ideas and unique vision in order to be recognized as a world class entertainment. TAO attained its original goal of one million tickets sales in seven and a half years. Next, TAO took their presentation to the world stage. TAO believed that their experiences gathered out in the world effectively work to shake off any generic image of classic Japanese drumming culture in Japan.

Since that goal achievement 12 years ago, TAO has been seen by more than 5 million spectators in 17 countries and 400 cities. Their universal success has attracted talented creators from around the world, broadening the infinite possibilities of TAO.

TAO performed at Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world, in 2004 and 2005 and achieved the No.1 ticket sales among more than 2000 groups in both years at the Festival. They received a great deal of attention from promoters all around the world. TAO then started full scale world tour stands such as a three month long run performance in Hamburg, 100 shows in Germany and Switzerland, engagements all around Australia, and arena shows in Taipei.

Finally, their first USA tour, a long term goal since the troupe’s beginning, commenced in the spring of 2010. American reviewers praised the group as “a sensational Japanese entertainment show like you have never seen!” 50 shows sold out on the tour, during which TAO received an invitation to perform at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. TAO is excited to return to Copley Symphony Hall in 2012 on their second USA tour.
