Upright & Grand Piano Festival

This one-month festival in January 2016 celebrates the relevance of this instrument with performances ranging from the concerto, solo recitals and a wide variety of community events inviting more public participation in the San Diego region. The San Diego Union-Tribune has offered a preview!

San Diego Symphony’s month-long festival offers a rare chance to explore the personal connection to piano music that we all share—teachers, amateurs, students, professionals and those who simply love the incredibly diverse world of keyboard music.

Throughout this month-long festival, San Diegans of all ages will have the opportunity to hear the full range of piano music—sonatas and solo pieces, piano duos, concertos for one (or three!) pianos, chamber music, orchestral scores and new works—including a new concerto by multi-talented singer-songwriter Ben Folds.

From Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue to Mozart's Concerto No. 7 for Three Pianos, this monumental event is a unique chance to reacquaint ourselves with some of our most loved landmarks and to explore new directions in piano music. We are pleased to produce the Festival in association with the La Jolla Music Society, the California Center for the Arts, Escondido and Poway Onstage.

UPRIGHT & GRAND brings to San Diego some of the world’s greatest artists performing beloved favorites and some surprises in this tribute to that most adaptable, flexible and democratic of instruments—the piano.

We will also be installing a number of "Pianos in Public Spaces" throughout the City and County, and we will host a special "Hands On" Community Day devoted to all things piano on Saturday, January 16 at the Jacobs Music Center.
