Chicago-native Rebecca Matayoshi is a violist with the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra and an Acting Section Violist with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Prior to her appointment in Hawai‘i she was a member of the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra in Osaka, Japan. Other professional engagements include the Dresdner Philharmonie, San Diego Opera, California Chamber Orchestra and The Lion King Broadway Tour, as well as studio and commercial work in Los Angeles. She enjoys chamber music and has worked with artists including Colin Jacobsen, David Kim, Luigi Piovano and Peter Lukas-Graf. In summers, she plays at the Oregon Coast and Music in the Mountains festivals.
She is an active educator in the community as a private instructor and coaches the viola section at Mira Mesa High School. Ms. Matayoshi works frequently with students of the San Diego Youth Symphony and Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra, and she has given masterclasses at San Diego State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has also been on faculty at the Estate Musicale Frentana festival in Lanciano, Italy.
Ms. Matayoshi holds a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she attended as the Edward J. Krolick full-scholarship recipient. She is an alumna of the Luzern Contemporary Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival and Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. Principal teachers and mentors include Marcus Thompson, Masumi Rostad, Rudolf Haken, Ralph Fielding and Roger Tapping.
