Barbie the Movie in Concert: 9-year-old guest conductor to join symphony musician parents for a magical musical moment

San Diego (August 8) — The San Diego Symphony Orchestra is set to bring Barbie to life like never before with Barbie: The Movie in Concert on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 7:30 PM. This dazzling evening promises a one-of-a-kind blend of cinema and live music, as the record-breaking full-length feature film plays on the big screen alongside a thrilling live performance of both its original score and the chart-topping hits from the iconic soundtrack.

Adding a heartwarming and unforgettable moment to the night, San Diego Symphony musicians and real-life couple Gregory and Courtney Cohen will be joined on stage by their daughter, Evelyn, who will make her debut at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park™ as a guest conductor. Evelyn will take the podium for a moving segment during Billie Eilish’s Oscar®-winning song, “What Was I Made For?”—creating a family performance that’s sure to leave a lasting impression for everyone.

Evelyn loves to perform. Whether it’s a dance or musical performance, she relishes the stage. Coming from a musical family, she has studied violin for several years and is currently taking Irish fiddle lessons with Wanda Law, a violist in the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. She also loves competitive Irish Dancing.

“Watching Evelyn conduct along to recordings during the pandemic, we never thought she would have her conducting debut at age 9,” states her parents, Courtney, San Diego Symphony Principal Librarian, and Gregory Cohen, San Diego Symphony Principal Percussion. “We are thrilled to share the stage with her and can’t wait to see her shine.”

Excited about the opportunity, Evelyn says, “I think it’s amazing that I get to conduct the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. I never thought that kids could conduct an orchestra, but now my dream has come true! I have also always loved Barbie, so I’m really looking forward to being a part of the Barbie movie in concert!”

Barbie: The Movie Live in Concert with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra is a celebration for fans of all ages. Guests are encouraged to wear their best pink attire or come dressed as their favorite characters from the film.
