Learning + Community

The San Diego Symphony Orchestra has a commitment to reaching all segments of our very diverse community.

In the 2016-17 season, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra presented 36 concerts and more than 200 related events, reaching more than 60,000 students from pre-school through adult. Our programs are comprehensive in their content and address California State Learning Standards in music and other subjects. SDSO musicians take an active role in developing and presenting our programs, making symphonic music exciting and accessible to all. 

The Orchestra offers educational programming for all ages. There is truly something for everyone!


For Pre-K Through Primary Grades

Linda and Shearn Platt Kinder Koncerts
These chamber orchestra concerts performed in satellite venues around the county are designed to introduce our youngest listeners to classical music, to the instruments of the orchestra and to the live concert experience. For Elementary Grades

Meet a Musician
San Diego Symphony Orchestra musicians visit classrooms to speak about life as a professional musician, demonstrate his/her instrument and answer questions.

Ensemble Performances
Small ensembles from the Orchestra visit groups of students at their school. Students learn about the instrumental families, how sound is produced on each instrument and how to listen actively to music.

Berton Family Young People's Concerts
Full-orchestra performances at Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall for school-age children.

For Middle School, High School, and College Students

 

"Best and Brightest"
This free annual concert features some of our community's most talented young orchestra musicians playing alongside members of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.

Dr. William and Evelyn Lamden Master Class Program
Visiting guest artists and San Diego Symphony Orchestra musicians offer advanced music students an opportunity to be evaluated and coached while other students listen and learn.

Instrumental Coach
Groups of young musicians in school orchestra and band programs can learn from a pro! Orchestra musicians bring their knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm to students during sectional rehearsals at the school site.

Open Rehearsals
High school and college level students have an exciting and unique opportunity to attend a rehearsal of a Jacobs' Masterworks concert. This is a wonderful way for students and teachers to see how the conductor, soloist and musicians work together to create the highest quality musical performance.

Student Rush Tickets
Students aged 35 and under with current ID may enjoy any San Diego Symphony Orchestra concert at the Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall for just $10, but must purchase their tickets no sooner than one hour in advance, limit 2 per ID, subject to availability. Family Concerts
Designed for 4-12 year-olds and their parents, these fun and interactive concerts help youngsters, parents and other family members discover and enjoy the power and beauty of symphony music.

For Adults

Ensemble Performances
Small ensembles from the Orchestra perform at local libraries, senior centers and hospice facilities.

What's the Score?
Enlightening pre-concert presentations hosted by Nuvi Mehta provide context for and musical excerpts from the day's program beginning 45 minutes before each Jacobs Masterworks concert at the Jacobs Music Center. Note "What's the Score?" has been suspended until the renovation of the Jacobs Music Center is completed in October 2023.
