The San Diego Symphony returns to music by presenting its first orchestral performance in nearly seven months with this special program. Music Director Rafael Payare conducts musicians of the San Diego Symphony in Beethoven’s "Triple Concerto," featuring solos by renowned cellist Alisa Weilerstein, pianist and music director for La Jolla Music Society SummerFest Inon Barnatan, and San Diego Symphony Concertmaster Jeff Thayer.

A Return To Music features three pieces in addition to Ludwig van Beethoven’s "Triple Concerto," including "Banner" – a tribute to and a rhapsody on "The Star-Spangled Banner" – by Black female composer Jessie Montgomery. Also featured on the program are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Divertimento in D major and George Walker's "Lyric for Strings." (Walker was the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.)

MUSICAL GUMBO: Jazz and the Black Experience

GIlbert Castellanos (Jazz @ The Jacobs curator) leads a wide-ranging and deeply personal interview with jazz luminaries Marshall Hawkins and Charles McPherson. These San Diego artists reflect on their experiences as Black musicians who came of age before the Civil Rights Era, performing with the likes of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, and Shirley Horn, and how their life experiences have shaped them as artists. They also share wisdom and advice from teaching younger generations of artists this music which was born from the Black American experience and the history of racism in America. This interview includes a special, short performance by the three masters
