PROGRAM NOTE:
Miniatures Set No. 6 (2015) was written for my friends violinist Alyssa Wang and percussionist Abby Langhorst. The work includes 6 well-known folk songs from Turkey and Cyprus:
I. Aşağıki Mahalle (From Thrace, Northwest Turkey, the folk song talks about how their neighborhood is better than the other neighborhoods that are surrounding their own neighborhood.)
II. Ellerinde Pankartlar (This is a political folk song about 34 people getting killed on 1977 International Worker's Day celebration in Taksim Square in Istanbul.)
III. Delilo (Popular folk dance shared with many cultures in the region neighboring Southeastern Turkey)
IV. Dolama Dolamayı (Folk song shared between both the Turks and the Greeks that live in Cyprus, love song talking about missing the loved one)
V. Tiridine Bandım (Folk song from the Western Black Sea Region, it is a love song with very absurd rhyming couplets)
VI. Giresun Karşılaması (Bride welcoming dance from the Eastern Black Sea Region)
The advantage of writing for violin is that it is possible to imitate Turkish string playing styles and instruments such as kemençe, and Edirne and Kastamonu styles of violin playing, and for percussion, I just wrote directly for Turkish folk instruments including davul and darbuka and also made Western percussion version. While writing based on these folk songs, I made small changes to fit the folk songs in my own style and added written-out improvisation sections which would normally be improvised by folk musicians.
The piece exists in multiple versions and can be performed as a solo string instrument (violin, viola, or cello) work, or as a string instrument and percussion duo.
