GIlbert Castellanos (Jazz @ The Jacobs curator) leads a wide-ranging and deeply personal interview with jazz luminaries Marshall Hawkins and Charles McPherson. These San Diego artists reflect on their experiences as Black musicians who came of age before the Civil Rights Era, performing with the likes of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, and Shirley Horn, and how their life experiences have shaped them as artists. They also share wisdom and advice from teaching younger generations of artists this music which was born from the Black American experience and the history of racism in America. This interview includes a special, short performance by the three masters
